It has been said that the name "Buffalo" is a corruption of the French phrase beau fleuve, "beautiful river," a phrase said to have been said by French explorers when they saw the Niagara River. However, this has been contradicted by other sources. French explorers actually referred to the Niagara River in print as Rivière aux Chevaux which means "River of Horses."
